I actually finished this awhile ago, but I've been writing day and night for work, so I haven't had the opportunity to comment. I mentioned something in the last post about reviewing it, but that was not quite correct. I don't review books or films. I just put down my thoughts. If I were to be a reviewer I'd have to read and view my materials before they were old enough to hit the dollar store. And I'd have to research, gather textual evidence, and be altogether professional which I'd prefer not to do here. I just want to ramble on. That's what this site is for; I have plenty of vetting research, organizing textual evidence, and agonizing over every little thing in my other writing life. This is my... place of flow... and the place where I can be self-centered.
I have not seen the movie. I haven't heard good things about it, but I'm still anxiously waiting for my husband to finish the book so that we can rent the film.
I truly enjoyed this novel. The whole idea seems blasphemous, but Seth Grahame-Smith is quite brilliant, in my opinion. Instead of blasphemy it felt to me like the novel revealed a wonderful act of fondness for our former president.
The storyline is nearly seamless tapestry of fact and fiction. I often pulled my phone out while reading to try to figure out what the real history was. Somehow, the writing is so convincing that a part of the reader is starting to think, "Wow, maybe he really did hunt vampires." So crazy, I know, but for me it was the perfect recipe for indulgent summer reading.
I came out the other side ready and willing to learn more about Abraham Lincoln -- and feeling like I truly did get a sense of him as a man. (Pull out the vampire stuff, and you learn quite some about the real man).
Will I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? Maybe if it lands in the dollar store, I'll pick it up.
